Augustine Gokah
Biography
One of the few water colourists in Ghana, he was born in 1961. Gokah studied at the college of Art, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi (1988) and holds a BA (HONS) Degree in Painting. He paints the reality of everyday life with passion and seriousness. His paintings predominantly spotlight notable scenes of the coast and Northern dwellers of Ghana, offering an insight look at the Landscape and its people.
‘His use of a low range of colours, sharp contrasts of light and dark, raw craftsmanship and a hint of modern underpinnings create an intrinsic tension between purity and sophistication. This persistent and consistent trait undeniably accounts for the multifaceted appeal and drama of his paintings.’ John Owoo.
He has had several shows both at home and abroad, his recent one was held last September at the Artist Alliance Gallery. His works have been widely collected at home and abroad, adorning both private homes and offices.
