Some painters show you music. Larry Otoo makes you hear it.

On Thursday 15 October, Let’s Dance! opened at TIGA Art Gallery. Forty eight paintings filled the walls with trumpeters, drummers, sharply dressed bandleaders and dancers caught mid step. There are small, quiet pieces on paper. There are huge canvases packed edge to edge with players and their crowds, and the biggest, Deepdown Cacophony, is eight feet wide.

Otoo has painted jazz and highlife for more than five decades, and this year he received the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Art Award for Lifetime Achievement in Painting. Standing in front of these works, it’s easy to see why. They are generous, funny and full of life.

As he once put it, “When I display them, they are no longer mine.” Come and claim a little of that joy for yourself. Let’s Dance! is open to the public until 17 November, daily from 11am to 7pm.
